Jax and Sonya to Reunite for Mortal Kombat Web Series

Double Flawless!

Some time ago, it was confirmed that director Kevin Tancharoen’s indie effort with Mortal Kombat: Rebirth has borne fruit with an all-new 10-episode web series that will fit into the MK canon. Hand in hand with the announcement was that Michael Jai White will be reprising his role of Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs from Rebirth into the upcoming webisodes. Well, now we get his partner as well. Through her verified Twitter account, actress Jeri Ryan has confirmed that she’ll playing Sonya Blade for the web series, which is now shooting. This is great news, indeed. Having both actors from Rebirth return should go a long way to keeping at least some of the flavor of Rebirth that fans latched onto so readily into the new MK series.

UPDATE: Apparently Ian Anthony Dale has also confirmed via Twitter that he will indeed reprise his role of Hanzo Hisashi for the web series. Oh, wait… Hanzo Hisashi is dead… his name… is Scorpion.

Mortal Kombat Rebirth-spawned Web Series to be Canon

Remember Mortal Kombat Rebirth? Of course you do! It was that awesome short film directed by Kevin Tancharoen and starring actors like Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan, Ian Anthony Dale, Lateef Crowder and others. It was supposed to be a pitch for an all-new reboot of the MK saga, but despite garnering a gazillion hits over it’s short reign over the web, it didn’t exactly do that. HOWEVER, it did bag for Director Tancharoen an actual MK project- not a new movie, but a 10-episode web series (webisodes, natch) that will tell the Mortal Kombat series like you haven’t seen yet. So far, the new show will retain Michael Jai White as Jax, and will have characters like Shao Khan, Liu Kang and more appear in the various chapters.

But that’s actually all old news. The latest on this subject is that Warner Bros. (who own the rights to MK) has just announced that the upcoming web-series will be 100% canon! Here be the press release:

Warner Premiere today announced development of a live-action digital series based on the best-selling Mortal Kombat videogame franchise. Directed by Kevin Tancharoen, known for his popular unofficial fan short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth which garnered over 10 million views online, and in conjunction with the upcoming Mortal Kombat videogame, this action-packed, digital series will take gamers deep into the history of warriors they know and love such as Scorpion, Johnny Cage and Liu Kang. Shooting for the digital series will take place in Vancouver starting in early February.

Well, I can’t wait to see this series given how great Rebirth was. Let’s hope that somehow Mr. Tancharoen still manages to keep the spirit of his energetic MK ideas into this somewhat new rendition of this fighting game story.

MK’s scariest babe gets her own trailer.

A new Mortal Kombat trailer spotlighting on the toothy terror herself has just been posted online, so check it out. It’s a pretty interesting take on the usual fight ad- where would you take a homicidal, blood-soaked, cannibalistic ninja assassin? The new and rebooted MK is due out later this year, expect more trailers and character spotlights to come.

New MK Scans: Sindel, Sonya, Kratos, Etcetera!

View it while it’s there!

UPDATE: Hadoken.net posted larger pics of the scans. Check ’em out here.
A video posted on Youtube is showing off some scans from a gaming mag with pics from the upcoming Mortal Kombat. Newly-revealed is Sindel, the long-haired Scream Queen of Outworld, who comes with a sexy outfit that leaves little to the imagination. Not to be outdone is Sonya Blade, who’s sporting her own skimpy outfit in a look that’s reminding me of Nina Williams’ Death By Degrees outfit… that’s a good thing, btw (the outfit was hot even if the game wasn’t). Also shown off is returning ninja Ermac, who’s so far my favorite ninja design (even if I don’t play him at all) and looks at Jax and some other fighters.

This new, rebooted MK looks slick as heck, but in the end, the proof is in the fighting. We’ll see if the actual fighting system, which has supposedly been redone to be more free-form, has the goods to keep players in this new Kombat. This is out in April 2011.

Immortal Kombat: Effin’ Kratos Coming to MK PS3!

Redefining what ‘K’ in MK will stand for.

Apparently his demise was very much exaggerated, as Kratos AKA The God of War will be making an appearance on the PS3 version of the upcoming Mortal Kombat. This is pretty damn cool, and while Kratos seemed a at first a good fit in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny on the PSP, ultimately the bloodless brawler seemed to water the god of war down.

That shouldn’t be the case in MK, where we can expect the Spartan to gut, cut and eviscerate with the best of them. How ’bout a sex minigame ala Test Your Might? Kratos’ own big daddy, David Jaffe, would surely think that only appropriate. As you’d expect, Kratos won’t be playable in the game’s Story Mode, but will have his own stuff like moves, fatalities and stage.

Of course, this is an exclusive for the PS3 version- will we see a similar surprise for Xbox360 owners? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Sonya Blade Kicks High!

Hadoken.net just posted several scans from a Russian gaming mag showing off Sonya Blade, MK’s original Blonde Bombshell back in action in the upcoming Mortal Kombat. Even though I’m not that big a fan of the green-loving commando, she certainly looks quite fetching. Check out the screens for some babe-fighting goodness!

SHOCKER! Sonya Blade is in Upcoming Mortal Kombat?!!

Screenshot reveals the latest add-ons to the upcoming brawler.

Okay, you got me… it’s really not a surprise, but heck, it’s nice to see another babe in this roster full of sweaty guys, creepy ninja and one harpy who can and will bite your head off and swallow it whole. With Jax confirmed just a few weeks ago, it was really only a matter of time before his partner was announced as well. Hopefully now that the cat’s out of the bag, we’ll see a video showing Miss Blade in action soon.
Also, concept art of Goro and Ermac have also surfaced online, leading to speculation that these challengers may also be in the game as well. You can check out the art over at Fighter’s Generation.

The yellow ninja’s story is one of joy and familial love. Not.

One of the hot fighters coming in the near future is a new and re-brutalized Mortal Kombat. With a bloody new look, a new fighting system, gory fatalities and more, this looks to be MK done right after a long time of doing wrong. The latest trailer is a character-centric spot, which may be the first of many. So, care to know the origin of the notorious yellow-garbed ninja?

HOT New Mortal Kombat Trailer!

Shadow boxing, shadow dismembering, etc…

IGN just debuted the second trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat game. It’s pretty short at just over a minute, plus two-thirds of the time you don’t really see anyone save for their shadows (which is why the trailer is named ‘shadows’). The music is pretty rocking though. I wanna see new characters already- PAX can’t get here soon enough. This new, back-to-brutal-roots MK is set for a 2011 release.

Two More Fighters Revealed for Mortal Kombat!

Kitana returns for her fans.

A couple more Kombatants have now shown themselves, after the slight reveal last week of 7 additional fighters in the upcoming Mortal Kombat. Kitana, princess of Outworld, returns in her trademark blue outfit, face mask and razor-tipped fans (as well as a nice new hairdo!). Cyrax, the yellow/gold ninja robot, also makes his first appearance and has come equipped with his glowing green net attack.

Also revealed were two new stages- the Bell Tower and Jade’s Desert (will the insidious green ninja babe be far behind?). You can check out the released screenshots in HD resolution at Game Reactor. Mortal Kombat is set for release sometime in 2011.
