Valkyria Chronicles 3 Intro Movie

New heroes and villains clash on the PSP in 2011.

Here’s the lovely opening anime intro movie to the upcoming Valkyria Chronicles 3 on the PSP. The animation is of pretty good quality and nicely shows off the three leads, Kurt Irving, Riella Marcellis and Imca, as well as their opposite numbers in the game, Calamity Raven, the Empire’s all-Darcsen special forces unit… a battle between outcasts and dark horses, looks like. Should be pretty interesting. The Japanese version is out in January 2011. No release info yet for the US and other territories, but it should be coming since the last VC was pretty popular. For now, enjoy the intro!

Meet the Characters of Valkyria Chronicles 3

Kurt and his girls are ready to fight!

Adriasang just posted tons of cool screens and character art for the next chapter of the Valkyria Chronicles series, Valkyria Chronicles 3 (PSP). Among the images are some kick-ass art of main hero Kurt Irving, Valkyr sweetie Riella and bad-ass gunner Imuka. Also in the article along with the heroes of the Nameless Squad are the game’s antagonists, namely the main members of the Empire’s Calamity Raven group- the CR’s leader Dahau, his second-in-command Lydia and sword-wielding Darcsen warrior, Zig.

Also appearing in some screenshots are characters from both the first and second VC games- apparently you’ll be seeing Welkin, Alicia and Squad 7 again, as well as Juliana from Lanseal Academy. Will we see anyone from Class G though?

I have to say I am loving the artworks and the somewhat darker, more gritty feel of this one. As a total addict of the second game currently, I am really looking forward to more turn-based shocktrooping come next year on the PSP. More as I get it then!

Valkyria Chronicles 2 (PSP) Waging War with Class

Back to School in Gallia.

For the past week or so, once again, I found myself neglecting the big ol’ PS3 and Xbox360 in favor of Sony’s handheld. The game in my sights is Valkyria Chronicles 2, the sequel to the under-appreciated classic on PS3.
The game is set once again in that anime-fantasy version of post WW1 Europe, in the Ragnite-rich but tiny state of Gallia. It’s a couple of years since the end of the big war with the Empire portrayed in the first Valkyria Chronicles, and things seem fine on the macro-scale. Unfortunately while the scrapes with outside threats have quieted down, internal conflicts are beginning to sprout like evil weeds. A rebellion has erupted in the southern regions, threatening to spread out and engulf the whole country if the current reigning ruler doesn’t step down. With Gallia’s standing army still in tatters, the militia unable to act due to legal technicalities, it’s up to the armed academe of Gallia’s Lanseal Academy to protect the civilian populace and put down the extremists. And they have to do it in between Math classes at that!

Ah, Lanseal Academy. You just have to love a school with its own munitions factory.

Man, now that I’m thinking about it, how dumb is the Empire to get on the Gallians’ bad side- I mean, these guys are probably the Israelis of Europa… they send their kids to school to become killing machines… I would NOT want to take on a country where schoolkids are armed with rocket launchers and state-of-the-art main battle tanks, would you?

Anyway, players now have a new main character in the form of Avan Hardins, a country lad and somewhat exceptional underachiever who suddenly finds himself following the steps of his late brother. Soon enrolling in Lanseal, he finds himself at the head of the school’s most troublesome class and headed into some fierce skirmishes. Will the intellectually-challenged but always-optimistic Avan be able to mold his classmates into the deadliest company of warmongers Gallia has ever seen? That’s up to you!

Like the first game, VC2 is mainly about sending your squad into combat, which is a combination of turn-based maneuvering/positioning on a set number of battlezones, with actual shot-by-shot fighting being handled by you actually moving a soldier’s sights on a target and then letting ‘er rip. In addition to the Scouts, Shocktroopers and Lancers from the first game, you also get to use handy Engineers and rather hardy Armored Techs in your squads. As you fight and level up, your can unlock new skills and even advanced classes to switch into, such as deadly Snipers, close-combat Fencers or anti-personnel Mortarers, or even the dreaded musical Anthem Corps!

Fans of the first game will be happy to know that some familiar faces will show up in VC2, and not just in simple cameos.

In between missions, you’ll also interact with Avan’s classmates- an unruly lot to be sure, consisting of all the troublemakers in Lanseal. You have everything from bullies to prima donnas, closet otaku, control freaks, outcasts and the odd blue-blood. But the more you use them in combat and get to know these problem kids, the more they’ll open up and be all that they can be- all the better soldiers to defend Gallia’s freedom from the rebel menace.

It’s all told in some entertaining cutscenes with anime-style talking heads and rudimentarily-animated character art which will either endear you or have you pressing the Start button to skip ’em. Personally, I found these little interludes quite entertaining, and now I’m addicted to unlocking every single one of my classmates’ stories. Gotta befriend ’em all!

It’s not all high school drama of course- you also have to juggle training your troops (raising levels), managing rosters to see who goes into combat and even developing new weapons and equipment for both your soldiers and your company’s lone but formidable tank. Your vehicle is customizable, able to be configured from turret to body to paint jobs, to fit missions from search-and-destroy to escort services. What a fun place Lanseal seems to be- it’s like Blackwater the School!

The game looks great on PSP, though purists of the original game will surely take issue with the degradation of the ‘watercolor’ style from before. Regardless, the game looks fantastic, both in the art and the in-game assets. For me the light-hearted art style is fine, and the tone of the game, mixing often comedic high school antics with war and politics is perfect for anime fans. Platoon this ain’t, but then, could you really expect realistic, gritty warfare in a world with big-eyed anime soldier babes complete with school crushes? The replay value also seems to be high as there are tons of options and stuff to unlock in the course of the game (including characters from the previous game) which you may miss the first time around.

The game wouldn’t be complete without some silver-haired, overpowered Valkyria babe in there somewhere…

In any case already well over 30 hours into this game, which is a lot more than I can say for the original. This is already quite the hit, and the sequel, Valkyria Chronicles 3, is already on the way. Perhaps, once I finish this I may just go back and revisit the original PS3 VC. This is a title that’s perfect for taking along on your PSP for a nice, long, addicting and satisfying strategy RPG/school-and-war sim. HIGHLY recommended!

Ride of the Valkyria to Continue on PSP

It’s a bit of a nice coincidence that while right now I’m actually getting into Valkyria Chronicles 2 on the PSP, the sequel, Valkyria Chronicles 3, has just been revealed and will be showcased this week at TGS. Famitsu recently confirmed that the strategy-RPG sequel will be released once again on Sony’s portable, and as before will feature an all-new storyline and cast of characters.

According to Famitsu, the story of VC3 will be set at the same time period as the first game, but will be on a different front and trio of heroes. Unlike the provincial militia in the first game and the academy cadets of the 2nd, this time the spotlight will be on the soldiers of the Nameless Squad, a special company of Gallian conscripts consisting of the dregs of the military- criminals, troublemakers and other misfits that no other outfit would take in. Kinda like the Zombie Squad from Stallone’s Cobra- they’re the guys (and gals) who do the dirty jobs the other soldiers won’t do. Also, they’re called the Nameless since they’re usually addressed by numbers instead of their actual names. Bad rap, dudes.

Taking the forefront will be Kurt AKA Number 7- he’s a formerly promising officer who was plunked into the Nameless after a bad incident; he’s hoping to perform well enough to get back to his former unit. Assisting Kurt will be two heroines- No. 1 AKA Imuka, the squad’s Ace, and No. 13, Riela Marcellis, who is secretly of Valkyrian descent. These two probably won’t get along too well as the game goes on since Imuka’s village was wiped out by the Valkyria some time ago… do you smell, catfight?

Anyway, when asked why the game isn’t on PS3, the producers cited that a PS3 entry would require lots of drastic changes and additions to the game, instead of the incremental developments doled out to the PSP games. And well, the PSP Valkyria 2 sold really well on release, which is easily a good reason for Sega and Sony to keep mining this vein. Yet another legacy of the original VC’s less-than-great performance before. Oh well.

The game should be out in early 2011 in Japan, with a wider release some time after. For now, I’ll try to finish up VC2 and perhaps try to go back and finish the first game. TGS should show off more info in any case. For all this info and more, check out Andriasang’s article over here.

Latest Tekken 6 Comic Update!

UltraJumpEgg’s Tekken 6 Chronicle heats up!

Even though Tekken 6 for consoles came out months ago, Katsuhiro Harada did mention that there will be continued support for the game post-launch. Well, aside from the patch that added online multiplayer support for the game’s Scenario Campaign mode, there hasn’t been much… although I’m still hoping for summer outfit packs. Then again, there’s still the so far quite consistent monthly release of Ultra Jump Egg’s Tekken 6 manga. The latest chapter has just been posted online, making it 8 ‘Battles’ so far.

Some may not like the manga’s somewhat light-hearted and generally comical approach, but I personally love it. Though the sight gags and SD characters appear quite frequently, the story knows when to ratchet it up serious when there’s action or a dramatic moment. The art, while a bit on the simpler side, doesn’t lack when it comes to portraying action, and nicely enough there isn’t a shortage of smackdowns in every issue. It also helps for me that the comic mainly centers on long-suffering heroine Asuka Kazama who finds herself saddled with rival-turned-friend/bedfellow Lili Rochefort, as both are my fave characters in the game. Heheh.

Anyway, so far the story has not only taken Asuka and Lili’s adventures in focus but also spotlighted Miguel and Bob, Zafina, Alisa and Lars. Heavies Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima have appeared in past episodes on the sidelines, but have, as of this issue, finally moved into a direct battle. In fact, there looks to be tons of action for the next few issues as no less than four major fights have been set up.

The comic doesn’t seem to be following the actual in-game series of events strictly- from what I can tell it’s more of a different take on the Tekken 6 storyline rather than a canonical chronicle of the actual in-game plot. It’s still a nice distraction and something for Tekken fans to look forward to every week.

Not sure how long the comic’s intended to run, but I think that it may probably be one of Namco-Bandai’s ways of keeping fans into the game’s characters and plot as we all await the next installment of the actual game. I just hope we don’t wait too long for the inevitable Tekken 7…

Dead or Alive coming to the PSP

Soon you can have Kasumi in your pants wherever you go.

Yet another fighting game franchise is being ported to Sony’s portable, this time from Tecmo. Yep, the big-boobed-babes of Dead or Alive are headed to the PSP via Dead or Alive Paradise. Unfortunately for fight fans, Kasumi, Tina, Leifang and company won’t be catfighting again- apparently Paradise is a somewhat cut-down version of the franchise’s most recent Xtreme games, just sans the volleyball. So no brawling or volleyball, what’s left? Apparently your time on the new vacation spot with the DOA ladies will be taken up by the various minigames, gambling and relationship management aspects, and we assume as well tons of cutscenes showing off the bikini-clad babes frolicking in trees or rubbing each other with lotion. As far as we know, all the DOA babes plus Tecmo’s gambling mascot Rio will be available in the game.

This is not exactly that new, in any case- apparently Japanese mobile phones got the original version of this game back in 2006. Talk about hand-me-downs…

What can I say? More fan service on the PSP is always good, but it’s a bummer that after all this time we’re still not seeing a proper DOA fighter. I guess if you want that on your PSP, you can always load the classic PSX DOA on your homebrew-enhanced PSP, to complement all the cheesecake Paradise will bring. Anyway, this seems like a harmless little diversion, but it remains to be seen if this is worth making space for on the PSP. More as we get it. Read the original article over at N4G here.

Tekken 6 PSP: Sawed-off Iron Fist-Fighting

Youtuber NYCTekken was apparently lucky enough to score an early copy of Tekken 6 for the PSP, and he’s posted a ton of gameplay vids showing off the second portable Iron Fist Tournament chapter.

So far, what I can gather is that the game looks- well- impressive! Though early vids show otherwise, the PSP does indeed show off a DR-or-better level of graphical quality and apparently moves at a solid 60FPS, with all characters and moves from the console and arcade versions present and accounted for. However, as expected there are several shortcuts and cutbacks from making this an exact port. Here are but a few…

There is a 300++ MB Install, which goes well to make loading times faster than DR.

No Scenario Campaign mode. In it’s place is a new Story Mode, although it’s apparently still the same as the Arena in the console modes- Prologue illustrations, 4 matches, CG ending.

New Modes. PSP game sees the return of Story Mode (as mentioned above). A Challenge mode menu contains the following play modes- Survival, Time Attack and Gold Rush (the last one wherein every hit on your opponent nets you cash).

No more real-time character models in the Select screen, it’s back to using illustrations as with DR.

No slow-mo replays of the knockout at the end of a round. During victory animation screens, no music plays for some reason.

Customization Shortcuts. Not all the items and clothing made it in- customs for the PSP have been simplified, fusing arm items with upper garments and tops, while bottoms have been fused with leg and foot items. This has to be delved into more to see every little detail retained or lost, but suffice to say, if you loved customizations in the console versions, prepare to lower your standards.

Apparently the 3P extra outfits are NOT in the PSP game.

Practice mode is same as the console versions, but you always train on the same blank, polygon stage (no stage select).

Yes, Lars and Alisa have Story Mode endings. Unfortunately if you have the console versions, you’ve seen them. SPOILER WARNING! Lars’ ending is the SC Intro CG, while Alisa’s ending is her cutscene battle with the helicopter in SC as well- it’s just given a different spin (Alisa stays with Lars and becomes part of his new PMC, fighting the chopper in the course of her first mission). Well, at least they have all-new prologue art…

Well, it seems that Tekken 6 PSP isn’t an exact port- which we all knew going in anyway. But really, I have to say that the cutting back of options in the Character Customization really hurts this version for me- that’s where most of the fun and replay is! All things considered though, Tekken 6 PSP still looks great and is a no-brainer purchase for anyone who enjoyed DR on the portable. At the very least, it’s a great way to practice your combos and up your skills even if you’re far away from your console and HDTV. More on this as we get it then.
