Escape from Exile: Several Months Later…

Posted in Fighting Games, Gaming, My Stuff, PC Gaming on July 29, 2008 by thelonegamer

Some time ago, I posted about Warriors of Elysia, the sequel to the campy PC all-female FMV fighter, Bikini Karate Babes. Well, it’s been quite a while since that post, and the game STILL hasn’t come out. If I didn’t know better, I’d scream VAPORWARE but there apparently is still some life in this upcoming brawler. But the creators aren’t making it easy. For one thing, the game has been continually delayed and, from the way the producers, Creative Edge Studios, has been pretty much selling everything not tied down (from ‘the privilege’ of appearing in the credits to the babes’ bikinis) to raise funds, things aren’t running so smoothly. But apparently it is still running, albeit not efficiently.

I also posted about Warriors of Elysia: Escape from Exile, a live-action DVD with 50-minutes of material, behind-the-scenes and action that sets up the upcoming game… well, I ordered the disc, but as of this writing have NOT received my order. Either Creative Edge used crappy mail and my order got lost along the way or it’s still crawling on the way to me, on the back of a pack mule somewhere along the Silk Road.

Well anyway, at least I know the darn DVD exists- I went through another route and my copy has been received and earmarked for immediate FedEx-ing to me. Maybe then I’ll be able to give a full review of the thing.

That all said, I have to still give a little bit of credit to Elysia’s creators- they’re sticking to their guns and still chugging away… but damn, they should get their act together. I want my damn bikini-clad brawler already.

To be honest though, I’m pretty happy with Soulcalibur IV for both my fighting game AND bikini girl battle needs… heheh…

Ten Things I’ve So Far Found Out in Soulcalibur IV

Posted in Fighting Games, Gaming, PS3, Soulcalibur IV, Xbox360 on July 28, 2008 by thelonegamer

Been playing Soulcalibur IV a lot since I got it last Saturday- not as much as I’d want, but still quite a bit. Still working on the review, but here are some things I’d like to share as of now.

No more Character Classes from Soul Calibur III, which is kinda disappointing. I will miss my Dancer Army…

Joke weapons are back and they’re as hilarious as ever.

Darth Vader is cool-looking but damn- he’s boring. He’s slow and his moves aren’t impressive. But at least his trademark over-the-head throw is pretty much a guaranteed Ring Out if you do it near the edge with your back to the wall. Man, Darth Maul would have been so cool in this game in place of Vader. But then, that’s what The Apprentice is for, I guess. Forget the reason why Darth is in the Caliburverse- I want to know why his student is so much more powerful and bad-ass than him…

Story Mode is a lot shorter, but contains Tag Play ala DOA or Tekken Tag, and battles against multiple opponents (one by one though). There are surprises for those who are into Soulcalibur lore. The endings are short, but really nicely animated and made (in realtime), and are for the most part meaningful and satisfying, and actually give a bit of closure to many of the characters. Some, unfortunately, suck. Like the Star Wars characters’.

CAS (Character Creation) is AWESOME with tons of options for almost unlimited character creation variants, and the HD graphics make sure your CAS looks as slick as the main fighters.

Main character customization now lets you fool around with the established fighters’ wardrobes. You can’t change much from the default P1 outfits, but everything else is yours to fool around with. Lingerie fights, anyone?

SCIV marks the return of a customizable Intro! Not as cool as making Astoroth frolick in a field of flowers, but still cool.

So far my favorite endings in Story Mode are Sophitia’s (touching), Setsuka (bad-ass and sexy) and Ivy’s (nice resolution). Man, I’m a such a softie.

Algol is a bad-ass boss, but he isn’t necessarily bad…

The Bonus mangaka-created characters are just glorified CAS skins with unique parts/outfits. Sadly, like the Star Wars characters you can’t edit or customize them in any way. BAH.

Overall though, I am having a BLAST with SCIV. It definitely is one of the best-looking games on PS3 so far, and is right up there with the graphical prowess of current fighters like Tekken 6 and VF5. Gameplay is fast, fun and addictive. Gonna play this one a lot as I wait for Namco to bring out the Iron Fist Tournament sequel later this year. Review to come soon!

Star Wars DLC Confirmed?

Posted in Fighting Games, Gaming, PS3, Soulcalibur IV, Xbox360 on July 26, 2008 by thelonegamer

Okay, Namco-Bandai’s been saying that the Star Wars guest characters for the PS3 and Xbox360 versions of Soulcalibur IV, Darth Vader and Yoda respectively, were intended to be exclusive to each console. Rumors have persisted since that the other character would eventually be available as DLC. A pic showing both master Jedi in one screen seemed to confirm the rumor, but was understandably met with suspicion. This recently-posted vid though seems to prove it without a doubt.

So, is it real? When will it happen? Things happen fast in these days of internet and online play, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

MAN, I haven’t even played my first fight on SCIV yet!

Soulcalibur IV in the HOUSE!

Posted in Fighting Games, Gaming, My Stuff, PS3, Soulcalibur IV, Xbox360 on July 26, 2008 by thelonegamer

Okay, I’ve got it. My copy of Soulcalibur IV for the PS3 arrived at about noontime, and I rushed home immediately. Of course, there are things to do first- immediately after slipping in the disc, I’m greeted by a 1.01 update patch, which will hopefully make sure things go smoothly with the game. I expect that there will also be the lengthy install, but if it makes loading times between matches almost non-existent, that will be worth it.
I guess my day and night is set- I’ll be putting in some serious play into this baby… we’ll see what we can see and do, and I’ll post all the stuff I find out as I get it. Later then!

Your Order Has Shipped!

Posted in Fighting Games, Gaming, My Stuff, PS3, Soulcalibur IV, Xbox360 on July 25, 2008 by thelonegamer

That simple sentence has MADE MY FREAKIN’ DAY. That’s ’cause it came from Play-Asia, and it means my copy of Soulcalibur IV is headed my way. ALL RIGHT!!! It’s about freakin’ time! Apparently the Asian version is already all over stores in Hong Kong, so why the hell not? Anyway, I’ll be getting the game most probably TOMORROW, just before or just after lunch or so, but I’ll probably only be able to play later that night since I’ve got work (damn). But MAN, this is great. Review to follow soon I guess, after I’ve put the requisite hours into the game.

WAHAHAAA! This is awesome.

Streetfighter IV Console Additions Hinted at SDCC

Posted in Fighting Games, PS3, Street Fighter IV, Xbox360 on July 25, 2008 by thelonegamer

This year’s San Diego Comic Convention had a pretty considerable bit dedicated to Streetfighter IV, with producer Yoshinori Ono hinting heavily at a couple of new characters who may be headed into the console versions. In a recent poll held by Capcom, apparently the most popular-requested characters are Cammy and Akuma. And it seems indeed that the amnesiac Brit babe may be destined for SFIV, if only for the fact that she appears prominently in a new anime cutscene premiered at the SDCC. The cinematic, showing Cammy, Chun Li and Guile as well as their motivations for entering Streetfighter IV, will be among others to be included with the home versions of SFIV. Also being teased heavily is the inclusion of Gouken, Ken and Ryu’s master, as a playable character.

I’m hoping that not only Cammy and Akuma but more characters will make it into SFIV… I still think the roster’s pretty thin in these days. We’ll just have to see. In any case, the game looks slick and should prove to be a fighting game to look out for early next year. The game is already out in Japan arcades.

Soulcalibur IV 1Up Review

Posted in Fighting Games, Gaming, PS3, Soulcalibur IV, Xbox360 on July 25, 2008 by thelonegamer

The first major gamesite review is unleashed on the web as 1Up finally gives their verdict on Namco-Bandai’s latest weapons-fighter. The game’s coverage on 1Up has been going on since the game’s first appearance last year, when they aired a Soulcalibur IV Special on the 1Up Show, meeting the members of Project Soul and seeing the game in VERY early state and the debut appearance of a then-unnamed Hilde. Well, it’s been quite a while since that early meeting, and it all comes to a head with this review.

VERY good first review, and this just makes me ache that much more to have this game. Just a few more freakin’ days. Our own review should be up some time after, with some days of heavy play. Later then!
