Ono VS Harada… Round 2, FIGHT!

Posted in Fan Service, Fighting Games, Game Advertising, Game-related Events, Gaming, PS3, Streetfighter, Streetfighter X Tekken, Tekken, Xbox360 on February 2, 2011 by thelonegamer

One shall stand, one shall fall!

Lately Twitter has become a battlefield- well, at least, a mudslinging arena, for the two dueling developers that comprise the leading franchises of the beat ’em up genre today. On one side, Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono, the deceptively jovial producer of the Streetfighter franchise. On the other, Namco-Bandai’s Katsuhiro Harada, iron-fisted director of the Tekken games. Their rivalry started when the two announced the Fighting Game Festival and their companies’ quasi-joint venture in producing two cross-over fighters using both of their iconic titles.

Ono X Harada, in video…

Ono has amped up the conflict, breaking into Namco-Bandai headquarters in the US and vandalizing the premises (well, apparently this was limited to Harada-san’s photographs) and blatantly impersonating Dead Rising’s Frank West. Harada-san attempted a similar invasion of Capcom’s HQ in Japan, but was promptly held up at the lobby when he presented his rather noticeable assault rifle and samurai sword.

Ok, this is really (right..?) all just a continuation of the two producers’ good-natured ribbing at each other as they continue to promote their much-anticipated fighting titles. Supposedly, Ono’s visit to NB USA was to talk about his upcoming Streetfighter X Tekken, which is sadly still very much lacking in any images or video aside from the initial media from months and months ago. Still, he assures gamers that the game IS being developed as of this very moment.

Judging from how long Streetfighter IV and SSFIV took to come out, it may be a bit of time still before we see the Tekken fighters in Capcom’s semi-cartoony/semi-serious graphic style, but perhaps we’ll see more stuff on it by E3 or other game shows later this year. As for Harada’s Tekken X Streetfighter, there’s probably even LESS to see, and supposedly the Tekken team will still be open to fan suggestions on the lineup till the end of the year (no hurry, guys!).

Well, at least fight fans have Tekken Tag Tournament 2 to look forward to in the near future, of which gameplay footage should be available in a couple of weeks when the game appears at the upcoming AOU 2011 Expo on February 18-19. Till then, as has been the case so far, expect screens or art to filter in through the cracks of the interwebs as we inch our way to the gaming shows. More as we get it then!

My Streetfighter X Tekken Match-Up Wish List

I guess that’s why Nina’s called ‘The Blonde Bomb’…

According to what I’ve gathered, Streetfighter X Tekken, the Capcom-developed Cross-over fighter, will be the second game of the Fighting Festival series (which includes the currently-in-development Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and the very-far-away Tekken X Streetfighter). Supposedly Yoshinori Ono and team are going into this title’s development right after their chores with SSFIV Arcade Edition and SSFIV 3D. I also got a tweet response from Ono-san that they will be only taking character suggestions for the roster only for a little while longer, so I guess I should get my ten cents in while he’s still open to it.
So here are my picks for fighters getting thrown into Next Big Mash-up Game. The way I’ve organized my picks is by match-up: a World Warrior corresponding to a nemesis Iron Fist Fighter.

M.Bison vs Heihachi. A no-brainer… these are the two big baddies of either franchise, and both have the seeming-invincibility of Wile E. Coyote. Bison has been obliterated several times but keeps coming back like a psycho-powered Terminator. Heihachi has survived being dropped off a cliff, time-travelling into the dark ages and getting blasted point blank with an mammoth explosion. The Shadaloo Dictator may have flashier powers, but time has proven that a strong enough fist can reach him where it hurts. In the end, maybe it’ll fall to who bribes the referees more.

Guile vs Paul. Once and for all, let’s decide on who has the right to wear the HAIR. Guile’s methodical, deliberate baiting style of fighting may be a hard match against Paul’s steamroller offense, but this should be a pretty good clash between two veteran combatants tested in down-and-dirty brawling.

Dhalsim vs Yoshimitsu. Two very different but very odd fighters match up. Sim with his stretchy limbs and fiery Yoga attacks against Yoshi’s sword techniques and mystical weirdness. Both have teleports and can strike from weird angles and tangents. Who’s more powerful? Who’s more weird? Only one way to find out!

Sakura vs Xiaoyu. These two represent each franchise’s youthful energy. It will be interesting to see how Ling’s style, with her Art of the Phoenix stances translate Streetfighter-style. Sakura’s straightforward offense should be a pretty interesting match against Ling’s deceptive evades and strikes.

Zangief vs King. The iconic grapplers from two worlds clash! Zangief may not have the huge arsenal of moves that King has, but he brings raw power. But ‘Gief may just as easily find himself eating Chain Grapples and a Musclebomber just as easily as he can dispense a Spinning Piledriver.

Makoto vs Asuka. Two hot-headed tomboys, both heirs to martial arts schools and growing up in a boys’ world. Once again, an interesting match-up given Makoto’s penchant for in-your-face, relentless offense versus Asuka’s more versatile style and potent reversals. What will win? Rindou-kan or Kazama-Ryu? Standard Dogi or Hakamas? I wanna know!

Ibuki vs Raven. These two represent the conventional ninja in each of their franchises, complete with shuriken, kunai, smoke bombs, deceptive tactics and efficient killing strikes. Ibuki’s the faster one with an impressive barrage of attacks that come from every direction. Raven on the other hand has an obvious edge in physical strength and enduranbce, plus his own bag of shinobi trickery. This will be a close one.

Karin Kanzuki vs Lili Rochefort Two hot blonde heiresses who both have killer skills to match their killer checkbooks. Both use self-taught martial arts and have tested them against opponents in down-and-dirty streetfights and deathmatches. While Karin and Lili should be a close and deaadly match-up, I think big and burly Ishizaki (Karin’s attendant) is more than a match for old, feeble Sebastian… unless the senior butler turns out to be a super killer werewolf elder master (oh, wait… wrong franchise).

Nina vs Cammy. Though originally matched up with Chun-Li (and in many ways they are kinda matched up, being the first ladies of each franchise), I think Miss Williams is much better ranged against the Delta Red’s former Killer Bee. Both of these blonde bombshells are deadly special forces operatives with similar traumatic cases of amnesia and psychosis. Cammy’s faster and loaded with high-flying attacks, while Nina is more methodical with ground-based grapples. This is one fight that really MUST happen.

Streetfighter X Tekken won’t be happening for a while- but things ARE happening judging from Yoshinori Ono’s recent visit (or invasion is perhaps a better word) of Namco-Bandai’s headquarters in the US. Hopefully there will be more news, perhaps screenshots or even video, coming soon… or at least in the next couple of months. Till then, I’ll be going back to pining for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 then.

Shock! Shock! Ken Confirmed in SF X Tekken?

Shotokan brothers unite to face the Iron Fist Invasion.

From one of the latest Tweetfighter updates from Yoshinori Ono comes this pic of the upcoming cross-over fighter, Streetfighter X Tekken, being playtested by the blokes over at Capcom UK. It’s just one pic, but quite telling as you can see the familiar blonde-haired locks of Ken beside Ryu’s portrait above the life bars (opposite Kazuya and Nina). Well, either that or it’s Cody wearing a red shirt. Or a very mannish, beret-less Cammy with her hair down. Anyway, Ken’s presence in the Capcom side roster is hardly a surprise, but it’s nice to see that there are developments ever since we last saw this game months ago. Apparently Ono-san is bringing the playable build around for Capcom offices outside Japan to see. Hopefully we’ll see a new trailer or actual vid soon to see other additions to this inevitable clash of franchises. More as we get it then.

Tekken Tag Tournament… Turbo?

Posted in Arcade, Fan Service, Fighting Games, Game-related Events, Gaming, Streetfighter, Streetfighter X Tekken, Tekken, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on November 21, 2010 by thelonegamer

Katsuhiro Harada’s latest tweets include several clips of gameplay from something called Tekken Tag Tournament Turbo– which is apparently a limited release edition (as in, limited to the Namco-Bandai offices, apparently) of the first Tekken Tag. Crazy speed, even crazier combos and lots of oddness abound. Suffice to say, as funny as it looks, I hope TTT2 is nowhere near anything like it. Anyway, check the gameplay out here, here and here.

On other Crossover-Fighter news, apparently Yoshinori Ono’s announcement regarding Streetfighter X Tekken in the recently-concluded Moscow Capcom event was nothing more than mentioning when the next possible news about SFxTekken will be… WHHAAAT? Holy nothing news, Batman! Oh well… what can you do? Keeping out eyes peeled still on Twitter then.

Fighting Game Gurus Strike a Pose!

Katsuhiro Harada and Yoshinori Ono mug it up at Namco’s R&D office.

Even though they’re surely busy as hell, jetsetting all over the globe for this or that conference, fan event or PR stunt, Tekken’s Main Man Katsuhiro Harada and Streetfighter Head Honcho Yoshinori Ono always have time to just act goofy. The pic above was posted on Twitter, and shows Ono-san visiting Namco-Bandai’s R&D Department (you can tell with the arcade machines all over the place). Apparently they met to talk about their upcoming cross-over games, though what exactly they discussed is open to speculation and imagination.

From all recent tweets from Ono, Streetfighter X Tekken has recently made final discussions regarding the character roster; he will be headed for Moscow this weekend for a SF event, and will supposedly be announcing something for both the arcade edition of SSFIV and SF X Tekken, along with the debut of an animated trailer.
On the Tekken front, all has been quiet since Harada’s showing of early game footage from Tekken Tag Tournament 2– hopefully more news and developments will be announced soon. We’ll just have to be patient and hunker down… it’s still a bit of a wait.

Tweetfighter Update

Blow by blow updates from Twitter!

What’s the latest in the Capcom side of fighting games? Well, according to Yoshinori Ono on Twitter, the SF producer will be headed to Moscow on November 20-21 for some event. He’ll be announcing something about Super Streetfighter IV and giving some news regarding Streetfighter X Tekken.

Also, Ono mentioned “And I’ll have special animation movie. It’s localized.”
What is this special animation movie? A new trailer for SSFIV or SF X Teken? Or perhaps something to do with the SSFIV Juri OVA? We’ll just have to wait and see. I’ll keep my eyes on Twitter for any more updates then.

Eurogamer Interviews Yoshinori Ono on Streetfighter X Tekken

Eurogamer just posted a quite meaty interview with Capcom’s Streetfighter Boss, Yoshinori Ono. This was apparently done some time ago, in fact during the time of the last Comicon, so don’t expect too much new stuff. Still, the questions asked are pretty good and the answers not too evasive. Anyway, us game fans probably want every scrap of into on the upcoming “Fighting Game Festival” that we can grab.
Ono-san talks about Streetfighter X Tekken, the future of Streetfighter IV, its arcade and mobile incarnations and the future of the fighting genre in general. Check it out here.

Streetfighter X Tekken Trash Talk: Jun Kazama to Return, Release Date Revision?

Gamespot just posted a cool video interview with Yoshinori Ono and Katsuhiro Harada from Gamescom (Ono’s still in his Chun-li getup). As far as the development of the Crossover Fighters, exact details are scarce but the two devs do talk about how their teams are going about making the upcoming fighters, such as listening to fan feedback and suggestions.

It’s really fun to see these two producers from two high profile games spar and interact onscreen via their body language- you can tell they’re very comfortable with each other and are good friends… perhaps the one reason how this whole thing was made possible in the first place.

Anyway, there were two significant things I got from the interview. One, apparently Ono has fixated on the still-MIA Jun Kazama (apparently simply because Harada ‘wants her out of Tekken’) and has stated that he will include her in his game- a point up for Jun loyalists (I’m an Asuka fan, so whatever). Since these Crossovers are non-canon, anything and anyone goes, I guess. Still, I wouldn’t break out any champagne until I see character models and artworks.

The other significant point is the release date- Ono said that his early prognosis of a release after 2 years earned him a scolding from Capcom boss Keiji Inafune, so he and his team will try to get the game out sooner than that. Good to hear. Really, dudes… I mean, we all waited for Tekken 6 for at least that long, but in that case we had the arcade version to tide us over. Let’s hope these much-awaited titles arrive a LOT sooner rather than later.

Check out the whole video interview here.

Streetfighter X Tekken Gameplay at Gamescom

Ryu and Kazuya clash in the land of beer and sausage.

Here’s a clip from IGN showing off some slightly different gameplay from the still-far-off crossover fighter, Streetfighter X Tekken. As before in SDCC, Ryu and Kazuya, with their respective female backups Chun-li and Nina, show off some signature moves, combos and a tag team-up maneuver.

Streetfighter X Tekken live-action ala Mortal Kombat?

The day’s presentation also included segments with live actors playing Kazuya, Ryu, Chun-li and Nina, as well as Harada-san and Ono hamming it up in some skits. It all looks pretty silly but awesome in its own way. You can watch the WHOLE show, costumes, katas, comedy and all, here.

Aside from the glimpse of Ryu in Tekken X Streetfighter though, nothing totally new revealed. Hopefully there will be more along once TGS arrives next month. Till the next update!

Streetfighter X Tekken: Kazuya and Nina in Development

Kazuya, SFIV-style.

Streetfighter producer Yoshinori Ono posted a couple of pics from the devlelopment of Streetfighter X Tekken over at his Twitter account. Surprisingly, these pics aren’t showing either Kazuya or Nina being beaten up by the World Warriors. What I can see for now is that the models sport some nice details, and that in the corner of the Kazuya pic I can see models of Bison and Juri… is this a subtle hint that they’re in the game? Juri vs Nina would be pretty cool… which one wins the right be THE purple-wearing vixen in the game. Heheh…

Anyway, Ono and his Namco-Bandai mirror, Katsuhiro Harada will be meeting up at Gamescom this week, and hopefully we’ll see a lot more of their crossover confrontations. I’m holding out for a look at Tekken X Streetfighter… you never know what Harada-san may be holding up his sleeve.

For higher-res versions of the two screens, go over to Fighters Generation.

Interesting choice of pose…
