Eager for the Apocalypse

Posted in Action Adventure, Gaming, PS3, RPGs, Xbox360 with tags on August 30, 2008 by thelonegamer

It’s still about two months away, but I’m pretty pumped for Bethesda Softwares’ Fallout 3 already. It’s no surprise though… I am a big fan of their previous big game- Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion– and this sequel to the popular post-apocalyptic RPG series looks to follow the same mold. You have your deep character creation and customization, a huge and detailed world to explore and interact with, and tons of action and intrigue to get involved in.

You could say F3 could be Oblivion in the far future, save with nuclear power and radiation filling in for magic, mutants for monsters and guns for swords. You communicate with individuals to carry out quests, start fights and so forth, making your mark in the dangerous world. A demo of Fallout 3 was just unveiled at the Pax 2008 gaming event recently, and it looks pretty cool. Right away after exiting your former home (Vault 101), your hero makes his/her way to a town called Megaton which has been built around a still-active nuclear missile.

A big decision and branch in the story appears right away as you are given the choice to destroy the town by detonating the missile or not… of course, this will have a BIG impact on the story. Explode the town and the you’ll get a reward from your mysterious client. Doing so however is plainly a very evil act (which affects your karma, a gameplay factor) and will surely erase a lot of potential storylines (along with the characters who would have given them) from the map. Still, you may want to have a save right before you make that fateful decision so you can play through again to see what the other side yields to you.

Anyway- branching storylines, tons of alternate endings, bloody action and combat and other interesting gameplay quirks are sure to abound in this upcoming mammoth RPG/sci-fi action epic. At the very least, this should be a spiritual successor to Oblivion, and that’s always a great thing. In the meantime, maybe I should break out ESIV again to pass the time to late October…

Streetfighter IV in Manila…

Posted in Arcade, Fighting Games, Gaming, Street Fighter IV on August 29, 2008 by thelonegamer

So, Capcom’s latest, Streetfighter IV, is out in both Japan and the US. How ’bout here in Manila?

Well, sadly, it seems like we won’t be seeing the 3-D Streetfighters very soon. Apparently a poster over at Pinoy Exchange asked the local arcade chain Time Zone if they were getting the game, and received this reply…

This is in response to the inquiry you sent us through our website. Please note that the price for the Street Fighter 4 game is almost double the Tekken 6’s price which is just unreasonably high. If the price comes down in the future, then we may consider acquiring it. We hope to see you always at any of our stores. Thank you for supporting Timezone. Have a nice day ahead!

Okay, let’s see… WTF? DOUBLE the price of Tekken 6? Well, anyway, I’ll take Tekken 6 over SFIV anyday of the week and double on Saturdays. In any case, the Capcom brawler will indeed be heading over to home consoles sometime next year so having no arcade release is no biggie. We’ll just have to be a little patient… or just double our playtime with Tekken 6. Heh.

Square-Enix makes a bid for Tecmo

Posted in Game-related Events, Gaming on August 29, 2008 by thelonegamer

Troubled game publisher Tecmo of Japan, recently rocked by the exit of game creator ‘rockstar’ Tomonobu Itagaki and the resignation of its controversial president, just may be getting a new start as Square Enix, the home of the Final Fantasy series, announced their aim for a majority stake in the recently-ailing game company. Kotaku and Reuters are reporting that SE aims to buy more than half of Tecmo’s shares at 920 yen each, 30 percent more than the studio’s previous closing price. SE called the it a “friendly deal,” and said that they would not pursue the bid if Tecmo didn’t respond by September 4 or rejected the proposal outright.

Man… will this mean that Dead Fantasy may actually become an actual fighting game? Pretty intriguing. We’ll just have to wait and see if Tecmo actually bites on the offer. More on this as we get it.

Tekken 6 Bloodline Rebellion First Screen- Kind of…

Posted in Arcade, Fighting Games, Gaming, PS3, Tekken 6 on August 28, 2008 by thelonegamer

Here’s one screen of the just-announced upgrade to Tekken 6. It’s just a title screen- not even a real screenshot, or anything. But at least we know it’s real. Who knows what new things will be added. I’m thinking a new intro movie… tons of new costumes… maybe a new fighter or so… maybe true confirmation that Leo Kleisen is indeed a girl… man, so many possibilities. Hopefully more will be forthcoming from Namco-Bandai soon.

Tekken 6 ‘Bloodline Rebellion’ Announced!

Posted in Arcade, Fighting Games, Gaming, PS3, Tekken 6 on August 28, 2008 by thelonegamer

SD-Tekken just posted an intriguing article about the announcement of Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion, which is apparently a new version of the arcade fighter. This upgrade supposedly has a December arcade release date. The first look at this new Tekken 6 version will be shown in the upcoming Amusement Show in Tokyo, Japan this September 20.

There’s no word on what changes or additions will be featured in Tekken 6BR, but I imagine it should be considerable owing to how quiet Namco-Bandai has been in these past several months. What could be added? New customizations/costumes are a possibility, as well as new moves. New characters? Since Lili Rochefort and Dragunov got added in the Tekken 5 upgrade Dark Resurrection, this could happen again. Playable Boss? Probably not (at least, I hope not)- though something like that is more suited for a console release. I imagine though that any new content in T6BR SHOULD make it into the PS3 version.

Man, this got me fired up again for Tekken 6. More on this hot topic as we get it! Click here to read the source article. Coolness!

Where’s Tekken 6 (Again)?

Posted in Fighting Games, Gaming, PS3, Tekken 6 on August 27, 2008 by thelonegamer

Okay, there’s still no word on when (or even IF) the latest installment of the Iron Fist Tournament is headed for the home- as I previously posted, I’m thinking that they’re holding out on releasing the game to coincide with the release of the live-action movie. I mean, the film will feature the T6 characters (at the very least Miguel) so it’s logical for Namco-Bandai to try to milk it for all its worth. Unfortunately, the movie’s due out in 2009 (hopefully sooner rather than later), so we have a bit of a wait in store.

Then again, there is a slight chance that we may hear something about Tekken 6 this coming Tokyo Game Show 2008. Namco’s going to be there, so… well, we can always hope. More on this as we get it.

Rumors of MGS5…

Posted in Action Adventure, Game-related Events, Gaming, Metal Gear Solid 4, PS3, Stealth-Action on August 26, 2008 by thelonegamer

Kotaku posted recently an article about now-former Kojima Productions Assistant Producer Ryan Payton’s leaving the fold of Solid Snake’s creator. Now, while the exit of Konami’s face and voice during MGS4’s making and arrival is pretty sad to hear… he does give kind of a hint of a sequel, which fans should eat up like candy, according to IGN.

“It’ll be hard not being involved in MGS5, but I’ve got the utmost confidence that Hideo Kojima, Ken Imaizumi, and our amazing team will put together another blockbuster game. I’ll be cheering from the sidelines,” Payton said.

Hmmm. Well, that’s nice to hear. Of course, Konami and Kojima Productions haven’t said anything yet (nor do we expect them to anytime soon), but this is pretty encouraging. I do hope that they take the advice of pretty much everyone and keep moving forward. No more prequels, no more pushing Ol’ Snake off his hammock for another mission… just push it forward. Same awesome world and setting, new hero, new villain, new mysteries, new legend built on awesome foundations. We’ll just have to see.

MK vs DC Nails the Joker

Posted in Fighting Games, Gaming, PS3, Xbox360 with tags on August 24, 2008 by thelonegamer

Okay, I have to admit that I’ve been pretty skeptical, even downright hostile, to Midway’s upcoming Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe… I still am- but little by little this weird mash-up fighter is impressing me. For one thing, the graphics and animations look cool. And now, the latest trailer from Gametrailers showed how the devs pretty much nailed the character of The Joker. The following spot shows off the latest features of the game- basically a new ‘Rage Mode’ (shades of Tekken 6), the Clown Prince of Crime’s moves as well as his hilariously nasty Fatality. It’s no Pencil Trick, but darn, that was pretty slick. Check it out.

Soulcalibur IV CASplay: Final Fantasy VII

Posted in Fighting Games, Gaming, PS3, Soulcalibur IV, Xbox360 on August 21, 2008 by thelonegamer

So… who’d win in a full-on, mano-e-mano throwdown between Final Fantasy VII hearthrobs Tifa Lockhart and Aerith Gainsborough? The answer is probably obvious- the super martial arts chick, of course! But it turns out that Aerith isn’t all flowers and pink ribbons, as this video from TheSoleSurvivor over at Youtube shows. With a little bit of tinkering in Soulcalibur IV‘s Character Creation mode, he’s brought us a Dream Match to remember. Check it out!

Firepower and Starpower in Red Alert 3

Posted in Gaming, PC Gaming, PS3, Strategy RTS, Xbox360 on August 20, 2008 by thelonegamer

The Leipzig Gaming Convention revealed quite a bit about the upcoming multi-platform RTS, Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3. A sequel of sorts, the game seems to rehash the premise of the previous game, with Soviets going back in time to try and change the future/present for their own ends. But messing with the time stream, while making the Soviets the dominant power, has created yet another side in the global struggle- the new Empire of the Rising Sun (Imperialist Japan). Looks like a cool free-for-all! Well, aside from all the firepower that’s going to be thrown around in the big skirmishes and battles, RE3 will be featuring a LOT of star power as well, with a big cast of notable actors filling in the roles of various characters in the Allied, Soviet and Imperial Sides:

Gemma Atkinson (the UK’s Hollyoaks), Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Hunt for Red October), Andrew Divoff (LOST), Kelly Hu (X2, The Scorpion King), Jenny McCarthy (Scream 3, former Playboy Playmate of the Year), Ivana Milicevic (Casino Royale), Jonathan Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean), J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man, Juno), Autumn Reeser (The OC), Peter Stormare (Prison Break, Armageddon), George Takei (Star Trek, Heroes), and two of the most recognizable names in competitive mixed martial arts Randy “The Natural” Couture (former UFC Heavyweight champion) and Gina “Conviction” Carano (Undefeated Elite XC fighter, American Gladiators).

Man, that’s a lot of names, and that should translate to the best hammy but awesome cinematics this side of Billy Dee Williams. I’m not really that big into RTS games, particularly on consoles, but this may warrant a look. The game is set to release on PC, PS3 and Xbox360 this coming October 28, 2008.
