HEY! We’ve Moved! Introducing: TheLoneGamer.Net!

Asuka sez: “Click on me and bookmark TheLoneGamer.Net or I’m gonna kick your butt!”

Hey there people! I mentioned that a little change would be happening to the blog on Twitter recently, and here it is. I guess I just came to the sudden realization that, hey, I’ve been doing this Lone Gamer thing for quite a bit of time- several years, in fact- so I guess I should get a wee bit more serious. So, I went and got my own domain for the blog, so now we’re not just an ordinary wordpress blog anymore, but our own little piece of the .net world!

TheLoneGamer.Net is now live! What does this mean? Well, not really that much- it just lets me have that much more control over the site, do a bit more with the help of an actual web guy and put on neat new widgets, eventually fix up my template and make the blog even slicker and maybe even earn a bit with some ads.
But what won’t change is that you’ll still be getting the same sincere, light-hearted, always-earnest, from-the-hip Hardcore Casual Gameblogging from A Single Player’s Perspective as you’ve always enjoyed for the past several years.

In any case, I will be keeping the old blog up for archival, redirecting and sentimental reasons. But if you come here regularly, bookmark TheLoneGamer.Net and let’s all just pretend nothing happened, but did. Wink, Wink!

Thundercats Remake? HOOOOOO!!!

Posted in Action Adventure, Anime, Fan Service, My Stuff on February 5, 2011 by thelonegamer

Lion-O and company get the anime reboot treatment.

I don’t know how many of you guys out there are old enough to remember or have enjoyed the classic Thundercats cartoon. It came from Rankin/Bass productions, and was one of the iconic adventure series back in the mid-80s. It was all about the last surviving people of the Planet Thundera- Thunderans, AKA Thundercats, and their battle to survive against various enemies and threats while making their new home on the strange world of Third Earth. It had magic, tech, combat, weird creatures, warrior women, mutants, Big Bad Mummy Villains and the token cute mascot, and it was pretty cool.

I have to say though, that the series has its iffy aspects. While the Thundercats Intro OP is EASILY one of the finest animated sequences I’ve ever seen (much in the same way the original Soul Edge Intro still remains awesome to this day), the actual show’s animation didn’t measure up to the masterpiece of action and acrobatic awesomeness of the opening (probably because the intro had a big budget and was probably made in Japan, while the actual in-show animation done elsewhere, with a far lower budget…).
Also, Thundercats has some of the WORST voice acting I’ve ever heard- or at least, worst voice characterizations. To be fair, the show only had two voice actresses for all the female characters appearing in the series (pulling double-triple or quadruple duty). This problem persisted in a lot of Rankin/Bass cartoons, as far as I can remember.

ANYWAY, the ‘Cats are gonna have a revival later this year- a new Thundercats cartoon is in production from Warner Bros., and it will have everything from bad-ass anime-esque character designs, an edgy storyline and lots of cool action you’d expect from shows like the DC Comics cartoons, Avatar the Last Airbender and more. The pic above is an official image from the show, and I have to say I like it (even if Cheetara seems a bit too waif-ish). I guess this is finally the chance fans have been waiting for given that the T’Cats movie never really materialized. I’ll surely be on this like a cat- er, a hawk. This should be pretty awesome.

My Streetfighter X Tekken Match-Up Wish List

Posted in Fan Service, Fighting Games, Game-related Events, Gaming, My Stuff, PS3, Streetfighter, Streetfighter X Tekken, Tekken, Xbox360 on February 2, 2011 by thelonegamer

I guess that’s why Nina’s called ‘The Blonde Bomb’…

According to what I’ve gathered, Streetfighter X Tekken, the Capcom-developed Cross-over fighter, will be the second game of the Fighting Festival series (which includes the currently-in-development Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and the very-far-away Tekken X Streetfighter). Supposedly Yoshinori Ono and team are going into this title’s development right after their chores with SSFIV Arcade Edition and SSFIV 3D. I also got a tweet response from Ono-san that they will be only taking character suggestions for the roster only for a little while longer, so I guess I should get my ten cents in while he’s still open to it.
So here are my picks for fighters getting thrown into Next Big Mash-up Game. The way I’ve organized my picks is by match-up: a World Warrior corresponding to a nemesis Iron Fist Fighter.

M.Bison vs Heihachi. A no-brainer… these are the two big baddies of either franchise, and both have the seeming-invincibility of Wile E. Coyote. Bison has been obliterated several times but keeps coming back like a psycho-powered Terminator. Heihachi has survived being dropped off a cliff, time-travelling into the dark ages and getting blasted point blank with an mammoth explosion. The Shadaloo Dictator may have flashier powers, but time has proven that a strong enough fist can reach him where it hurts. In the end, maybe it’ll fall to who bribes the referees more.

Guile vs Paul. Once and for all, let’s decide on who has the right to wear the HAIR. Guile’s methodical, deliberate baiting style of fighting may be a hard match against Paul’s steamroller offense, but this should be a pretty good clash between two veteran combatants tested in down-and-dirty brawling.

Dhalsim vs Yoshimitsu. Two very different but very odd fighters match up. Sim with his stretchy limbs and fiery Yoga attacks against Yoshi’s sword techniques and mystical weirdness. Both have teleports and can strike from weird angles and tangents. Who’s more powerful? Who’s more weird? Only one way to find out!

Sakura vs Xiaoyu. These two represent each franchise’s youthful energy. It will be interesting to see how Ling’s style, with her Art of the Phoenix stances translate Streetfighter-style. Sakura’s straightforward offense should be a pretty interesting match against Ling’s deceptive evades and strikes.

Zangief vs King. The iconic grapplers from two worlds clash! Zangief may not have the huge arsenal of moves that King has, but he brings raw power. But ‘Gief may just as easily find himself eating Chain Grapples and a Musclebomber just as easily as he can dispense a Spinning Piledriver.

Makoto vs Asuka. Two hot-headed tomboys, both heirs to martial arts schools and growing up in a boys’ world. Once again, an interesting match-up given Makoto’s penchant for in-your-face, relentless offense versus Asuka’s more versatile style and potent reversals. What will win? Rindou-kan or Kazama-Ryu? Standard Dogi or Hakamas? I wanna know!

Ibuki vs Raven. These two represent the conventional ninja in each of their franchises, complete with shuriken, kunai, smoke bombs, deceptive tactics and efficient killing strikes. Ibuki’s the faster one with an impressive barrage of attacks that come from every direction. Raven on the other hand has an obvious edge in physical strength and enduranbce, plus his own bag of shinobi trickery. This will be a close one.

Karin Kanzuki vs Lili Rochefort Two hot blonde heiresses who both have killer skills to match their killer checkbooks. Both use self-taught martial arts and have tested them against opponents in down-and-dirty streetfights and deathmatches. While Karin and Lili should be a close and deaadly match-up, I think big and burly Ishizaki (Karin’s attendant) is more than a match for old, feeble Sebastian… unless the senior butler turns out to be a super killer werewolf elder master (oh, wait… wrong franchise).

Nina vs Cammy. Though originally matched up with Chun-Li (and in many ways they are kinda matched up, being the first ladies of each franchise), I think Miss Williams is much better ranged against the Delta Red’s former Killer Bee. Both of these blonde bombshells are deadly special forces operatives with similar traumatic cases of amnesia and psychosis. Cammy’s faster and loaded with high-flying attacks, while Nina is more methodical with ground-based grapples. This is one fight that really MUST happen.

Streetfighter X Tekken won’t be happening for a while- but things ARE happening judging from Yoshinori Ono’s recent visit (or invasion is perhaps a better word) of Namco-Bandai’s headquarters in the US. Hopefully there will be more news, perhaps screenshots or even video, coming soon… or at least in the next couple of months. Till then, I’ll be going back to pining for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 then.

Gazing Into My Crystal Ball: Future Fighting on NGP

Posted in Fighting Games, Game Advertising, Game-related Events, Gaming, My Stuff, Next Generation Portable, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown on January 27, 2011 by thelonegamer

I’ll just throw this one into the air. Pure speculation on my part.

Sega will announce Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown for Sony’s Next Generation Portable.

Sega is a third party dev for the system, and NGP needs solid fighters to make up the lineup of games, like how the 3DS already has SSFIV, DOA and Blazblue off the bat. One of the titles in the NGP’s lineup of launch titles is something called ‘Reality Fighters’, but that’s certainly not to the level of any big fighting game.

One more guess. Namco-Bandai will port a Tekken title on the Next Gen Portable as well. I’d be happy with an arcade-or-console-perfect port of Tekken 6, but perhaps going further maybe it’ll be a port of the upcoming Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Or maybe even Tekken X Streetfighter. Either it’ll be an actual version specific to the NGP, or the PS3 titles will be compatible on the portable system.

These are just guesses/wishes/hopes on my part. I just really, really, really want a home verson of VF5FS already. And my Tekken fix as well. If these do happen, remember, you read about them first HERE.

Moving on…

Musing About Tekken Tag 2: Returning Fighters Predictions, Updated

Posted in Arcade, Fan Service, Fighting Games, Game Advertising, Game-related Events, Gaming, My Stuff, PS3, Tekken, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Xbox360 on January 26, 2011 by thelonegamer

Regular readers will probably remember that I already touched upon the subject of returning MIA’s to the Tekken arena. Since then though, things have happened (basically the confirmation of Jinpachi Mishima as the first returnee), and I think my list is due for a slight revision. Let’s see if I call out any guess correctly or if my original list was still for the better. Well then, here’s my new list of Wanted Returning Characters for Tekken Tag Tournament 2. It’s a shorter list, but I’ve thought them out more.

I want the costume she’s wearing to be one of her alts…

Kunimitsu. Still want this hot ninja babe to appear, although the recent introduction of Jaycee means there will be two masked babes in the game if she does appear, which does not bode well. Still, the possibility of her fighting style being very cool and new (a cross between Yoshi and Raven, maybe?) is too tantalizing to ignore for me.

Jun will be back. I think.

Jun Kazama. Yep, I still hold fast that despite everything, despite Katsuhiro Harada’s seeming resistance to her returning, there’s been too much clamor for the original Kazama-ryu style fighter to make an appearance in TTT2. I’m hoping Jun will be significantly different from Asuka, and at least with some nice customizations and costumes. I’m of two minds as to how she will be portrayed- in canon she’s probably in her thirties, so she’s older than most of the female roster but should still be a beauty to behold. But the team may play with timelines a bit in this non-canon game and just show her in her young prime appearance. I am okay with either.
In any case, if she does appear, I expect she may be the last one revealed just to keep all the Jun fans in suspense… that is, if Harada has a nasty streak in him. Heheh…

If she does return, hopefully sans Wolf Demon…

Unknown. Heck, Why NOT, since they brought back Jinpachi? She was the boss in the first Tekken Tag Tournament, so she’s got a history with this particular franchise. How would she look and what would her customizations or costumes be? I hope the wolf spirit won’t reappear, though I’d love for her to be back in her old black goo or ragged dress outfits. Her fight style would be as before- switching from fighter to fighter at random in-game (instead of Mokujin who changes only per round), which would make her a true Tekken expert’s choice of player.

Other possibilities for returning are Michelle Chang– as a probable replacement for Julia in case she turns out to have had an identity change. Devil (and thus Angel) might not appear in a normal sense, as Harada has repeatedly said ‘they are doing something new with him’. Doctor Boskonovitch doesn’t seem to be on Harada’s mind at all. Alex, P-Jack, Tetsujin and Combot are just alt skins. Then there are the Ogres- Ogre and True Ogre– whom I really don’t like but admit have a good chance of being included.

I guess for now, the three babes above are my guesses in this little game. Hopefully at least one or even two of them turn up in the roster soon. With as yet only 42 fighters so far playable (including Jaycee and Jinpachi), I think that it’s perhaps safe to say that there may be up to four slots more for any additional fighters, whether returning or all-new. We’ll just have to wait and see then, eh? What are your thoughts, dudes and dudettes?

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is slated for arcade release in Japan this Summer 2011.

“Prepare for the Next Battle!”

Whenever Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada posts this online (either on his Facebook or Twitter), I just get the feeling it’s a precursor to something. Something meaning, perhaps a new character reveal, impending info or updates or some other matter concerning the upcoming Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Well, he just posted it several hours ago, so now I’m expecting.

It’s still almost a month till AOU 2010, where Harada has said gameplay vids of TTT2 will surface. While I don’t expect a new trailer till then, perhaps we’ll see other media. Up to now, we’ve only seen two additional characters shown off, and several returning characters’ artworks and screens. That still leaves 30++ returning characters still to make their presence known, and only Harada-knows how many additional fighters still waiting to be uncovered. As AOU’s appearance of Tekken Tag may reveal stuff like a look at the Character Select screen and the general look of the roster, perhaps info building up to that may be leaked out. Perhaps we’ll see more stuff on the next issues of Famitsu Weekly, or other Japanese mags, or even some of the gaming sites like Gamespot which have proven to be still in the loop in terms of fighting games. But of course, most of all, perhaps Harada himself will post stuff on his Twitter account, just as he did with the most recent pics of the new Yoshimitsu.

Anyway, I’ll keep my eyes and browser peeled. More as I get it then! For now, back to playing then…

Dead Space iPhone Gameplay

Posted in Dead Space 2, Game Advertising, Game-related Events, Gaming, iGaming, iPad, iPhone, Mobile Games, My Stuff, Survival Horror on January 19, 2011 by thelonegamer

Dismemberment on the go!

Here’s the first official trailer of Dead Space on the iPhone. From the look of it, it seems that EA has done a pretty fine job of porting the horror of hapless Isaac Clarke’s adventures against the body-snatching Necromorphs. There’s the almost HUD-less interface, an arsenal of limb-cutting tools, dark corridors of menace and, of course, horrific misshapen beasties all hell-bent on making you soil your pants as they make Isaac into chopped liver. Supposedly this portable chapter bridges the gap between the first and second DS games.

Even on a small iPhone screen, this should have players jumping in their seats if you have a good pair of earphones- and doubly so on an iPad. Color me pretty interested. Dead Space on iOS4 should be out on the appstore at the same time of the console release of Dead Space 2, which should place it sometime next week.
