Tekken 6 Character Countdown Part 37: Zafina

Zafina. She’s not bad… she’s just rendered that way.

As a way of counting down the time to the release of Tekken 6 for the PS3 and Xbox360, I’ve decided to begin this weekly series of lengthy, character-specific articles, each one featuring one of the 40 or so competing warriors in the latest and greatest King of Iron Fist Tournament. Hopefully, by the time we finish and reach character number 40, we’ll have the console version of Tekken 6 in our hands already.

Sadly though, we’re at number 38 and we’re still a solid 2 months away from release. Even if we stretch our countdown a bit, we’re still going to end without Tekken 6 in our hands yet… but again… what the heck. I’ll think of something to pass the time by then. Heheh…

Anyway. Number 38 brings us to one of the newest challengers in the roster. This exotic combatant brings with her an ancient and lethal fighting style, characterized by some very unusual contortions and stances. The first ever Tekken fighter to hail from the mysterious Middle East, this beautiful but deadly warrior and assassin perplexes many with her true motives and nature. She’s the hunter from the desert, the veiled avenger, the sinister seer. She’s Zafina.

Zafina
Distinguishing Features: Stunningly beautiful. Flexibility worthy of the Cirque de Soleil. Wears a bit too much eyeshadow. Intoxicating perfume.

Strengths: Confusing stances and moves. Quick and very damaging moves. Strong psychic powers and precognitive abilities. Sharp dresser.

Weaknesses: Most moves are unsafe and prone to punishment, making her often the most unpopular of the new challengers. Vulnerable when switching stances. Men who can express their feelings.

Affiliation: None. Seeking out the two ‘evil stars’ foretold in her prophetic visions of an apocalyptic doom, with the goal of destroying them.

Background: A native of a small, isolated village in the Middle East, Zafina was born into a family of evil vanquishers whose bloodline goes back into ancient times. From an eary age, she was trained to be a warrior and guardian of the royal family’s tomb. When a heavily-armed group assaulted the tomb, Zafina single-handedly defeated them all. In recognition of her prowess, she was named her sect’s sole assassin.
In her public life, Zafina lived and worked as an astrologer. In recent nights she had been having many disturbing dreams and visions, which had eventually led her to consult with her elder. She learned of a prophecy that proclaimed that that when two ‘evil stars’ come into contact, the magic that the family had been protecting would be broken, and the world would end.

Zafina then set out on a journey that led her to the far east. She would seek out the two evil stars of her visions and destroy them in order to prevent the oncoming cataclysm.

Character Analysis: The lovely and lethal Zafina- for me, easily the most interesting of the quartet of newcomers in Tekken 6.0. Yeah, obviously it’s simply because she’s the only babe but then anyone has to agree once they see her move that she’s a lot more intriguing than the three blokes (or kinda-bloke in Leo). Described as a practitioner of ‘Assassination Arts’ from the Middle East, Zafina’s movements have been likened to that of Voldo from Soul Calibur, thanks to her odd stances and contortions, which include her crawling on all fours like a spider. They’re really weird and in many ways disturbing to see, but damn interesting. She’s definitely a character I’ll be using once the game arrives, no matter how weak or strong she is perceived to be.

But not only her looks and animations have been called unusual, but her demeanor and alignment as well. Is Zafina evil or good? Is she considered a villain or hero?
Zafina seems to walk (or crawl) the line between light and dark- she’s an assassin, ready to take lives in the course of her mission. She’s certainly sinister-looking, and her laughter in the midst of battle may point to either her being very confident in battle or may point to a sadistic streak. However, we have to take into account as well her end goal of preventing what she perceives as the end of the world, which is certainly a goal of a ‘hero’.

My take? I think Zafina’s bad-ass and ruthless, but surely a heroine. I think that this will be validated once we see her in action, interacting with other characters in Tekken 6’s story modes. As alien as her techniques and personality may be, the proof is in the pudding- her deeds will be the proof of her true nature.

Stay tuned next week as we delve into another fighter’s story!

Tekken 6 is set for release on PS3, Xbox360 and PSP this October 2009.

  1. I love Zafina. She’s hot.

  2. do you think t6 will have bonus games

  3. I think Zafin will have bonus GAMES…

    • I don’t expect any more bonus games or modes after all the effort Harada-san and team have put (or are putting) into Scenario Campaign. But who knows… maybe they’ll surprise us.

  4. they might as dlc

  5. I don’t think Harada was very excited about DLC, he said there were no plans.

    • Well, in an interview in EDGE, Harada said that if there was going to be DLC, it would be stuff unrelated directly to the actual game (characters, stages). He’s more inclined to giving stuff like themes, wallpapers and so on, but is adamant in saying that the game itself would be a complete package. That said, a bonus game may not be so far fetched. However, it’s clearly not a priority.

  6. yeah but its why tekken dr selled so well

  7. here’s a proposition for you in tekken 7 they could unleash a mode where you can create your own move like in trials HD where you can create your own track you could have a pointer were you can use your fighters limbs

  8. when, it would using the wire frame mod that the devs use

  9. plus it would boost it right to the top, its revolutionary

  10. what about team battle, survival, time attack, continuous will they still appear in the console
