Tekken 6 Character Countdown Part 35: Feng Wei

Feng Wei: Enter the Dragon God.

As a way of counting down the time to the release of Tekken 6 for the PS3 and Xbox360, I’ve decided to begin this weekly series of lengthy, character-specific articles, each one featuring one of the 40 or so competing warriors in the latest and greatest King of Iron Fist Tournament. Hopefully, by the time we finish and reach character number 40, we’ll have the console version of Tekken 6 in our hands already.

Part 36 brings us another relative newcomer to the Tekken series. One of the more formidable fighters in the roster, this brutal and quite amoral competitor is a dedicated martial artist- perhaps too dedicated, in fact. With blood on his hands and the readiness to spill even more all for the pursuit of ultimate power and strength, this fighter is truly not someone to take lightly. He’s the Kung Fu Fugitive, the Destroyer of Dojos, the Master of the God Fist style… he’s Feng Wei.

Feng Wei
Distinguishing Features: Looks like the most evil and buff Vulcan you’ll ever see. More ripped than the Hulk’s trousers. Wardrobe that ranges from kung-fu accessories and garb to pimpish gangster fashion.

Strengths: Feng’s brutal, ruthless style is fast, fierce and intimidating, with quick and deceptive high and low multi-hit strikes and throws.

Weaknesses: Hard to master and use effectively. Still not quite as powerful as some of the game’s heavy-hitters, but getting there.

Affiliation: None. Everyone is fair game to this dangerous martial arts predator.

Background: A gifted youth taken in by a dojo of a master known as ‘Shinken’, or possessed with the Divine Fists, Feng Wei was recognized as the school’s best student by age 20. However, during one night when his master scolded him for fighting outside the dojo, Feng attacked and killed him. It was during this night that Feng learned that to truly become powerful, he had to find and unlock the secrets of the Shinken Scrolls that had been stolen by the Mishima Clan many years ago.

As time went by, Feng ranged throughout China and Japan, attacking and destroying many martial arts schools and dojos. It was for this reason that he is being pursued by Interpol detective Lei Wulong and Kazama-ryu fighter Asuka Kazama.
Feng participated in the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 and was able to break into the Mishima Vaults. There, he found the Shinken Scroll he sought and immediately left, eluding his pursuers.

But when Feng opened the scroll, all he found was a message: “The One who destroys all other styles and makes them his own shall become a warrior superior to all men, the Dragon God.” Afterwards, Feng spent his time seeking out and defeating other fighters of various styles. When he learned about the upcoming King of Iron Fist Tournament 6, he heads once more to Japan to further expand his power.

Character Analysis: Feng Wei. Definitely another not-good guy in the roster, this Kung Fu Thug is amoral and ruthless, ready to take on anyone, man or woman, young or old, powerful or weak, to satisfy his lust for power. Being a lone wolf outside of the Mishima Zaibatsu power struggle, it’s interesting to speculate where Feng stands in the ladder of fighting prowess. Is his path of the Dragon God something that will have great repercussions on the future, or just a pipe dream? In any case, this guy may not be very likable, but he’s definitely bad-ass and a formidable challenger who can back up his arrogance with some impressive skills. If there is anything that can be admired of him, it’s his single-minded dedication to perfection. His utter lack of scruples though leaves a lot to be desired.

What lies in the future for the Dragon God Wannabee? He’s definitely not going to change his personality and goals anytime soon- this dangerous fighter won’t stop until he attains his perceived goal of ultimate power. Everyone, even the other power players and bad boys of the roster, had better keep their guard up… lest they become Dragon Chow.

Stay tuned next week as we delve into yet another fighter’s story!

Tekken 6 is set for release on PS3, Xbox360 and PSP this October 2009.
