Tekken 6 Character Countdown Part 27: Craig Marduk

The bigger they are, the harder they hit.

As a way of counting down the time to the release of Tekken 6 for the PS3 and Xbox360, I’ve decided to begin this weekly series of lengthy, character-specific articles, each one featuring one of the 40 or so competing warriors in the latest and greatest King of Iron Fist Tournament. Hopefully, by the time we finish and reach character number 40, we’ll have the console version of Tekken 6 in our hands already.

Part 27 brings us to a relatively new fighter in the roster. Making his debut in Tekken 4, this impressive-looking challenger is certainly one of the largest characters to appear in the series, along with one of the biggest egos as well. But this savage competitor definitely has the strength and power to back up his cocky confidence. He’s the MMA Man-Mountain, Craig Marduk.

Craig Marduk
Distinguishing Features: MASSIVE bald guy with bulging muscles that just scream ‘STEROIDS!!!’ Often has a mike or loudspeaker in his hands. Would make Bigfoot look petite.

Strengths: Brutally strong yet fast for his size. Great reach. Effective tackle takedown and mount attacks. Very effective Item Move Attack (Football Helmet). Smarter than he looks.

Weaknesses: His size makes him a big target to hit. Some of his moves have been nerfed. Often has trouble getting through doorways.

Affiliation: Teamed up with his friend, King in a pretty personal conflict to find his mystery nemesis, Armor King.

Background: Barred from the professional MMA circuit due to a minor scandal, the undefeated Craig Marduk drifted for a while, angrily picking fights wherever he went. In one particular scrap he ended up killing his opponent, which turned out to be Armor King. Imprisoned for manslaughter, he was given a ten year prison term.

However, two years later he was released through the efforts of a mysterious benefactor. This turned out to be none other than King the Second, who intended to avenge his slain mentor. Craig soon entered the Tekken 4 Tournament, where he and King met and fought. King ended up beating Marduk almost to death, sending him to the hospital. However, at the last moment King relented from striking the deathblow on a comatose Craig, after seeing a photo of the man with his elderly parents.

After he recovered, Craig immediately trained hard to get his revenge. He entered the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 wearing a black jaguar mask and issued a challenge to King. Without fail, King met his enemy and the two fought a fair, even battle with King once again emerging victorious. However, after all was said and done, King extended a hand in friendship to his foe. Since then, the two have been partners in the ring, winning championship after championship.

Recently after a match, Craig was attacked by a mysterious fighter who looked just like the man he supposedly killed, Armor King. Not one to back down from a fight and determined to find out the identity of his attacker, Craig enters the latest Tekken Tournament with his sworn friend, King, to face the threat head on…

Character Analysis: Looking and sounding like something from Conan the Barbarian, Craig is certainly one tough-looking hombre. As the largest and tallest fighter on the roster, he’s surely one to pick if you want to intimidate your opponents. Thankfully the MMA fighter does indeed have the skills to back up his cocky attitude, and his strength is truly something to fear in the arena.
As a character, Craig is pretty brash and initially unlikable- however there is indeed much more to him than meets the eye. He’s surely smarter and more cunning than his brutish appearance lets on. For all we know, he took Anna to the opera after their match in Tekken 5!

Truly there IS more to Marduk than all the bluster and the loudmouthed boasting, thanks to him being steered to a better, higher road by his new friend and partner, King. This friendship is so far leading the true champion within Craig to emerge.

What lies in the future for Craig Marduk? It all depends on what is revealed in the upcoming tournament. If Craig continues to be friends and allies with King, that friendship should continue to bring out the best in him. Hopefully we see Marduk’s true heart and courage even more in the future, with a code of honor that matches his great stature.

Stay tuned next week as we take on another fighter’s story!

Tekken 6 is set for release on PS3, Xbox360 and PSP this Fall 2009.

Cool! A lot of people won’t understand but Marduk’s my favourite fighter in all of fighting games! I like your review about him and would like to see more of other fighters in Tekken as well!
