Tekken 6 Character Countdown Part 19: Armor King

The Master of Dark Wrestling, Resurrected.

As a way of counting down the time to the release of Tekken 6 for the PS3 and Xbox360, I’ve decided to begin this weekly series of lengthy, character-specific articles, each one featuring one of the 40 or so competing warriors in the latest and greatest King of Iron Fist Tournament. Hopefully, by the time we finish and reach character number 40, we’ll have the console version of Tekken in our hands already.

Part 19 brings us to a sinister figure- a hulking silhouette encased in armor wearing a snarling black jaguar mask. A terrifying opponent by any measure, this fighter has an air of mystery and menace about him- if only for the simple reason that he was supposed to be dead. But apparently, the circumstances behind Armor King’s demise were greatly exaggerated.

Armor King
Distinguishing Features: The black Jaguar mask. Spiked steel armor and dark-hued attire. Red eye. Speaks in snarls and roars.

Strengths: Fast, brutal and possesses tons of hard-hitting slams and throws. Dirty fighter! Dirty fighter!

Weaknesses: Not many- one of the game’s powerhouses that required some nerfing in the consequent revisions and patches to the Tekken 6.0. Still prone to frequent hairball attacks.

Affiliation: None. This lone wolf has his own agenda, and it apparently involves putting a lot of hurt on Craig Marduk.

Background: A feared luchadore wrestler and bearer of the enchanted black jaguar mask, the fighter known as Armor King was long the rival of the other masked wrestler, King. Armor King lost one eye during a match when King accidentally smashed it in… though he doesn’t seem to blame King that much for it.
During Tekken 2, when King fell into alcoholic depression, it was Armor King who approached him and got his rival to regain his fighting spirit and power. In Tekken 3, Armor King was absent but was apparently spared an attack from Ogre, or was able to avoid contact with the God of Fighting. However, he was aware that his friend and rival King fell to the monster. It was Armor King who trained King the Second, raising a talented orphan into a wrestler worthy of his predecessor’s name.

Prior to Tekken 4, Armor King was apparently killed during a bar room brawl with the Vale Tudo fighter Craig Marduk.

But in Tekken 5 (Dark Resurrection), a new fighter wearing the Black Jaguar mask and armored costume emerges, attacking Craig. The new Armor King continues to harass Marduk into Tekken 6, goading both him and King into an inevitable confrontation.

Character Analysis: Another awesome fighter in Tekken, Armor King has always been the ‘darker’ and more badass version of King; how can you make a Jaguar masked wrestler more scary? Put him in steel armor! Armor King fought a lot like King in the earlier games, but has since then become a unique fighter all his own, with his own brutal throws, grapples and combos. He’s not one of my favorites, but he’s certainly a great fighter to learn for hard-hitting attacks and some of the most satisfying moves in the game.
Who IS behind the mask? We never did learn if Armor King did indeed die in that bar room brawl with Marduk- is it THE Armor King, returned to avenge himself, or is it a successor, much like King the Second, taking revenge for his deceased master? We can speculate all we want- the answer lies in the Story mode of Tekken 6 for the home versions… and we all can’t wait to find out the answer, right?

What lies in the future for Armor King? If history is a basis, I’m thinking that the confrontation between Armor King, Marduk and King may end amicably, with a nigh-unbeatable team of giants being formed once the anger has been set aside. Another possibility is that Armor King may continue to be an enemy to King and Marduk, a feud that certainly is something intriguing to see continue as the series moves on. Whatever happens, it appears that the current Armor King- whether he’s the real true blue Armor or a new bearer to the one-eyed Jaguar- is here to keep making his presence felt.

Stay tuned next week as we delve into another fighter’s story!

Tekken 6 is slated for the PS3, Xbox360 and the PSP this Fall 2009.
