Tekken 6 Character Countdown Part 18: King

Hail to the King.

As a way of counting down the time to the release of Tekken 6 for the PS3 and Xbox360, I’ve decided to begin this weekly series of lengthy, character-specific articles, each one featuring one of the 40 or so competing warriors in the latest and greatest King of Iron Fist Tournament. Hopefully, by the time we finish and reach character number 40, we’ll have the console version of Tekken in our hands already.

Part 18 brings us to a character who has been in the Tekken tournament since the beginning, though the actual person is a relative newcomer. Taking over from the original bearer of his honorable name, this young but immensely powerful fighter battles for honor, for friendship, for duty and for an apparent fetish for furry, growling masks. Make way for his majesty… King.

King
Distingsuishing Features: The Jaguar Mask. Huge, bulging muscles that would land him in the WWE in no time. Talks in deep growls and subtitles.

Strengths: Fast, powerful and commands the largest, most powerful collection of throws and multi-part holds in the game.

Weaknesses: His multi-parts are now more for show than a truly effective tactic. Still lacks the hard-hitting single blows of some of the game’s power players. At heart, a real softie. Suffers frequent hairball attacks.

Affiliation: Teamed up with his friend Craig Marduk and currently searching for Armor King.

Background: The original King was a luchadore wrestler whose hard, brawling life eventually found him sprawled near death in front of a monastery. Nursed back to health by the priests, he found his true calling and became a man of the cloth himself. He soon found himself a mission and resolved to build an orphanage to prevent children from suffering the same life he had to endure before. King entered the first Tekken tournament and met his longtime rival, Armor King. Winning third place, King was at last able to build his orphanage.

In Tekken 2, King became successful in the wrestling field. However, when a child under his care died, he fell into deep depression and reverted back to his alcoholic days. Armor King visited his old rival and convinced him to put on the Jaguar Mask once again and regain his former stature. King eventually did so, and returned in the 2nd King of Iron Fist tournament. Though he lost to Armor King, he did not give up and kept fighting to support his orphanage. Unfortunately, some time after Tekken 2, King was attacked by the being known as Ogre, or the ‘God of Fighting’ and killed.

Tekken 3 saw the rise of a new King; an orphan raised by the first King. The 24-year old youth took on the responsibility of protecting the orphanage after King’s disappearance, even donning a mask and entering into wrestling competitions. Unfortunately, he knew little real wrestling and so lost every bout he entered. He was eventually approached by Armor King, who had come to investigate the rumors of a new King. Armor King took the youth under his wing and after four years honed him into a fighter worthy of his name. When King learned from Armor King of the true circumstances of his foster father’s death, he resolved to enter the Tekken 3 tournament and defeat the God of Fighting.

Prior to Tekken 4, King learned that his master Armor King had been killed in a bar room brawl. The man convicted for killing Armor King was the Vale Tudo fighter, Craig Marduk. King made sure to have Marduk released from prison and issued a challenge to meet him at the Fourth King of Iron Fist tournament. Craig and King fought, with King emerging the victor and sending Marduk to the hospital. There, King followed and prepared to deal a deathblow. However, as King stood before the comatose Craig, he saw at the bedside a photograph of Marduk and his elderly parents- coming to his senses, King laid down his thirst for revenge and walked away.

That wasn’t the last of the rivalry as Marduk would challenge King to a rematch in Tekken 5. Despite warnings from friends like Julia Chang that it may be a trap, King resolved to face his nemesis. Surprisingly, Marduk met him straight on, telling him that he wanted their fight to be fair and square after turning over a new leaf. The battle was hard, but once again King came out the victor. As Craig struggled to get up afterwards, King extended a hand of friendship to his foe, and it was accepted. Since then, King and Marduk have been a winning team in the wrestling ring.

Recently though, Craig was assaulted by a mysterious fighter wearing the same costume and mask as Armor King. Angry at the idea of some impostor wearing his dead master’s mask and attacking his friend, King enters the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 with Craig to find this new Armor King…

Character Analysis: Certainly a bad-ass and unique character to Tekken, this masked luchadore is one of the best fighters in the roster and truly a force to be reckoned with in the hands of an expert. He’s not one of my usual characters, but he’s one I’d love to master and use, though it would take much time and practice to fully master this wrestler’s full arsenal.
As a character, King is one of Tekken’s true heroes- a man who fights for the good of others. Far more noble and true than some of the game’s power players, the man known as King is certainly a fighter worthy and capable of going for the top spot of the tournament, even if his current storyline is at present very personal and has little to do with the overall storyline. At least though his story, aligned with Armor King’s and Marduk’s, is an engaging, if small, piece of the tableau that is the Tekken soap opera.
What lies in the future for King? Certainly King will continue to be a formidable part of the roster, even if the mask needs to be passed on to another wearer. Whether King the Second or another continues the fight, we can be sure the growling Jaguar Mask will always be around to fight for the needy.

Stay tuned next week as we take up another fighter’s story!

Tekken 6 is slated for the PS3 and Xbox360 this Fall 2009.
