Tekken 6 Character Countdown Part 10: Julia Chang

Enter the Kung-fu Cowgirl.

As a way of counting down the time to the release of Tekken 6 for the PS3 and Xbox360, I’ve decided to begin this weekly series of lengthy, character-specific articles, each one featuring one of the 40 or so competing warriors in the latest and greatest King of Iron Fist Tournament. Hopefully, by the time we finish and reach character number 40, we’ll have the console version of Tekken in our hands already.

Part 10 is here, so we’re one-fourth of the way to our long-awaited console version. This time, the fighter in focus is on another of the roster’s lovely ladies. A second-generation competitor, this strong-willed crusader is a heady mix of brains and brawn. She’s grown up a lot since her first appearance in the Iron Fist Tournament, maturing from a vengeful, hot-headed spitfire to a tempered, veteran warrior for the planet. Scientist, nature-lover, martial artist, megane beauty and now, a heroine fighting to prevent a dark prophecy from coming to pass… our fighter for the week is Julia Chang.

Julia Chang
Distinguishing Features: Athletic and tan but with straight-A college girl appeal. Tribal feathers, leather, denim and cowboy boots make up half her wardrobe. iPod with ‘Circle of Life’ and ‘Sounds of Nature’. Occasionally caught with soil under her fingernails.

Strengths: Really packs a punch with some stunning blows and tricky high-low combos. Has effective throws learned from watching wrestling shows she snuck in between her National Geographic documentaries. Blessed with the Speed of the Puma, Eyes of the Hawk, Strength of the- no, wait… that’s Bravestarr.

Weaknesses: Some of her strings and delay-hits can get predictable, and she’s still not as strong as some of the heavy hitters, so she has to go on the offense and never let up on her opponent to win. Has perhaps one of the most useless Item Moves in the game.

Affiliation: On a personal quest to save the world from a dark prophecy foretold by an old woman of her tribe, which puts her in inevitable conflict with either or both Kazuya or Jin. This places her in a parallel direction to other fighters like Asuka Kazama, Ling Xiaoyu and Zafina, but so far appears to be working alone.

Background: The adopted daughter of first-generation Tekken fighter Michelle Chang, Julia took her mother’s place during the Third King of Iron Fist Tournament, during the Crisis with Ogre. Heihachi sought out Michelle for her amulet, which had special powers to control the supernatural beast. When Michelle disappeared, Julia entered the Tekken tournament to find her.
She eventually rescued Michelle and learned of Heihachi’s evil designs on her mother’s amulet. Despite wanting to gain revenge on Heihachi and the Zaibatsu, Julia agrees to put aside her hatred at Michelle’s request and both go home to Arizona.

Years pass, and as Julia matures as a young woman she becomes a researcher for G-Corporation trying to make her dream of saving the world’s dying forests a reality. Her efforts are stymied when the Mishima Zaibatsu attacks G-Corp’s facilities, taking her data in custody. Julia joined the 4th Tekken Tournament to recover the reforestation research, but failed. Undaunted, she continued to work on her own… but her efforts proved futile.

By the end of the Fifth Tournament, Julia had finally acquired the research data she required to continue her plans, and built a lab to continue her work. Though initially fruitless, Julia finally gets a glimmer of hope that her efforts to save the forests will someday succeed.

Recently though, Julia was approached by an old woman and seer of her tribe who told her of an ominous premonition- that evil will be reborn and engulf the world if Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama were to meet in battle. Though at first skeptical, Julia soon realized that the war currently raging in the world between the Mishima Zaibatsu and G-Corporation validated the warnings as truth. Putting aside her research for the moment, Julia enters the coming Tournament to prevent the dark prophecy from happening.

Character Analysis: Waaay back in the original Tekken, Michelle Chang was the only other girl in the lineup and I didn’t really take to her- the blonde assassin chick was far more interesting in both look, feel and fighting style. When Julia took over Michelle’s ‘slot’ in the game, I warmed up to her a bit. Her attacks got more varied and interesting, and she was hot in that denim skirt. Heh.
Julia has grown even more in the past several games, becoming a woman in Tekken 4 and Tekken 5, and having a truly distinct and effective fighting style. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to use her well yet, but I certainly find her a lot more appealing now. Time will tell though if she becomes a main of mine.

Julia is, in my opinion, one of the ‘heroes’ of the game- a definite good guy (girl, of course) and white knight which is refreshing in a roster where the main characters are evil pretty boys and half-devil would-be world beaters. Despite her gentle appearance and understated style, she’s definitely one of the game’s most hard-hitting and formidable fighters. Once ruled by impulse and desire for revenge, she’s now a champion for a greater cause even if she doesn’t realize it. Heroes like Julia are driven- they have little room for love or a quiet life, which means that Ganryu should just give up and find another girl to lavish his affections on. This girl is married to the planet.

What does the future hold for Julia? Well, if we’re to take from the game’s storylines and progress so far, whether her efforts to reforest the desert succeed or not, Julia will surely need to regularly beat her plowshares into tomahawks every so often. I mean, who else is going to save the world from the Devil Gene and the Mishima Zaibatsu? Greenpeace?

Stay tuned next week as we delve into another fighter’s story!

Tekken 6 is slated for release on PS3 and Xbox360 in Fall 2009.

  1. Nice! But I absolutely HATE Julia. She’s annoying and damn hard to beat.

  2. Lisa Tekken Fighter Says:

Julia is my favourite character. I know her inside out in Tekken 3 but her moves have changed sometimes quite dramatically in later tekkens and feel fairly different overall. Her canyon blasts are awesome.
She looks really fast in Tekken 6 but I hope she doesnt feel “lighter” like xiaoyu and other girls in her moves

  3. Maiko Sriyani Says:

I’m also fan of Julia because her personality, and her physically, are my idol.
And, she’s using the style of the protagonist in KENJI manga’s. (one of my favourite teenhood mangas 🙂 ). It’s the Li Shu Wen’s style of Ba Ji Quan.
Many Tekken fan don’t know about this fact.
